Do You Know Which Type Of Plants Can Be Grown Hydroponically?

March 21, 2016

Hydroponics are plants that are grown with nutrients and water without soil. In growing the plants, the water must be passed directly to the plant’s root system. In most cases, the root system either hangs directly over the nutrient solution or is misted by the nutrient solution. The root could also be in an enclosed bottle or trough which has been filled with a soil substitute known as a substrate. The substrate may contain a lot of different materials such as sawdust.

Although many plants can grow and flourish under these conditions, there are some plants that will bring only losses or that will not maximize the resources. As a farmer, it is important that one is aware of what they can grow in hydroponics so that they achieve maximum yields from their labor and money.

Flowers
It is a known fact that flowers have a lot of profits for those who grow them. If you can maintain your flowers all year round, the more benefits you will have. Hydroponic greenhouses are a great way to grow plants from seedling to a fully mature flower. Seeds can be put in the nutrient solution or in the substrate and sprinkled with water few times a day. When they have grown bigger they can be transplanted into the nutrient solution or into another substrate arrangement. The biggest advantage is that a farmer can cultivate flowers all year round and the flowers can mature quickly.

Vegetables
Green leafed plants do amazingly well in hydroponic greenhouses. However, it is better to avoid plants such as corn, zucchini, summer squash and a lot vining plants which can be a bit bulky and may end up consuming all the space in your unit. To make maximum use of your resources it is better that you concentrate on plants that are suited for compact spaces and that grow mature quickly. Plants that grow under the soil such as onions, potatoes and carrots can also be grown, but they will require a lot of special care and attention. Beans, spinach, kale, cabbages, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower among many others grow much faster and produce a lot of yields.

Herbs
Many people who practice hydroponic farming have noted that herbs do well in the hydroponic greenhouses. Most herbs grow without any problem and require only the regular checks and care and nothing special. Though all herbs can grow here, there are some which do exceedingly well. They include: catnip, anise, basil, chervil, chives, marjoram, cilantro, coriander, dill, chamomile, fennel, lavender, mint, oregano, thyme, tarragon, sage and parsley.

Vining plants
Vining plants such as peas, tomatoes and passion fruits also do well in hydroponic setups. The only thing they require that is special is that they require support as they grow. This support can be provided by tying them vertically with a string. Peppers also flourish in these conditions.

Root crops
Root crops tend to do well when put in large containers that are crossed by deep channels which allow room for root growth. The channels are crafted depending on the depth of the roots of the plant.
